ABOUT ALTINKUM

Altinkum is the resort within the town of Didim (Didmya), located on the Southern Aegean region of Turkey, on the Aegean coast. The word "Altinkum" translates to "golden sands", which aptly describes the beautiful long, golden sandy beach that gently slopes into the clear Aegean Sea.

The town of Didim is a fantastic mix of both old and new, dominated at the top of the town by the ancient site of Apollo's Temple - a must see on your next visit to Turkey.

Around the resort of Altinkum there is a vast choice of cafes, bars, restaurants and night clubs - something to suit every taste. The seafront offers a wide choice of European menus, whilst further into the town of Didim you can find authentic Turkish cafes and restaurants. Whatever your taste in food you are bound to satisfy your appetite, whether you are a vegetarian, love meat and fish or just have a sweet tooth!

Whatever you are looking for from a holiday, Altinkum is sure to please. The locals are warm and friendly - always ready to have a chat and pass the time of day.

Nearly everybody speaks English, but it is worth learning a few words to help you on your way. We have selected a few words (which are changed on a regular basis) which you may find useful.

Altinkum is worth visiting at different times of the year, as each season brings a different feel to the resort. Whilst July and August are obviously very hot (+40°), the months of May, June, September and October are very warm, and ideal times to take an excursion or two.

The local market - held every Saturday, offers an amazing choice of fruit, vegetables, meat and fish which are beautifully fresh and very cheap. You will also find a huge selection of nuts, sweets, biscuits and herbs, as well as leather goods, linens and souvenirs.

Altinkum has a good choice of shops, with several chemists, a Photo-shop , clothes shops and Jewellers'. There are several small grocery shops and two good sized supermarkets. In the town of Didim there is a large selection of places to spend your money!

As well as the main beach of Altinkum, there are several smaller beaches around the coastline which are quieter and ideal for taking a dip in the clear waters. These can be found on the way to Didim Marina - a newly constructed large marina which will accommodate super yachts and is likely to bring more visitors to the resort.

Having a Turkish Bath is a highly recommended experience, leaving your skin smooth and soft- plus feeling very relaxed!

If you are interested in history, there are many important historical sites - the most famous being Ephesus , (approximately 2 hours away). More local are the sites of Priene and Miletus. There are also plenty of other tours to choose from (such as Water parks, the healing mud baths and the Turtle beach) and there are reputable excursion companies in Altinkum for you to arrange any of the sightseeing tours.
